19. Dina
Dina looked into the mirror as Henrique, the top stylish at Jasmineâs, threaded a chunk of her hair through his slender fingers, and then â snip! â sliced away a good three inches. Her hair fell to the floor in a dark, feathery, puffclock. In the background, Dina watched Archie pacing about, chatting on his mobile, doing business. As usual. She looked back down at the copy of Marie Claire in her lap and decided it was best not to look up until Henrique had finished.
It had been Archieâs idea to drag Dina to the hairdressers, declaring Henrique was one of his oldest friends and the best in the business. Dina knew that it was Archieâs way of saying sorry, and she was touched by the gesture. They had spent the weekend both making a huge effort to repair things and be nice to each other. But the row had left wounds that hadnât healed. Every time Archieâs words echoed in her head, it was like sprinkling salt into the cuts in her heart.
As Henrique began to twist her hair up into little foil packets, Dina resisted the restlessness prickling over her. She realised, with a vague sense of surprise, that she was bored, and uneasy. If Archie had brought her here six months ago, she would have been utterly enthralled by the excitement of being pampered. Maybe Iâm getting spoilt, she told herself, maybe Iâm forgetting how lucky I am. I mean, how many other girlfriends get taken out on a Sunday afternoon for a one thousand pound haircut? Catching Archieâs eye in the mirror, she smiled, and he gave her a thumbs up and blew her a kiss. Itâs going to be alright, she told herself again, the rowâs forgotten, itâs going to be alright.
Henrique left her for a while to give her highlights a chance to take, but she found it hard to concentrate. She glanced up into the mirror again and suddenly, impulsively, she found herself blowing hard on the glass. Her heart began to beat hard as she stared at the misty circle, waiting for words to appear.
As the mist faded away, a sense of deep disappointment washed over her. She thought: what if he never comes back?
Henrique appeared and untwisted her hair, combing and drying it.
âDa âda!â he cried, and Archie came up behind him, admiring Dinaâs new look. Her hair was all shades of golden and brown and buttercup, falling about her face in a sleek, choppy cut.
âItâs lovely,â Dina exclaimed, but she couldnât help feeling odd. âI look soâ¦differentâ¦â
âYou look sophisticated,â said Archie. âThose curls were so messy.â
The weekend passed. On Sunday night they talked again. Dina promised to make more of an effort to be tidy and Archie in turn promised to be less anal and more compromising. Then they made love, and this time it felt almost like their old lovemaking again, passionate but tender.
On Monday morning Archie went off to work and Dina tried to drop off again but she couldnât.
